The rms value of alternating quantity is defined as the AC valve of current flowing through a given resistance for a given time produces the same amount of heat as produced by the direct current when flowing through the same resistance for the same time.

Graphical Method:
Let
us consider AC sine wave. Let i,, i2, i3, ..., i, be the instantaneous valve of
the current.
According
to Joule's law, when a current is passing through any resistor heat is
produced.
